Over the years, we have gained industry experience in picture hanging services and we felt it was about time to share some of our tips regarding DIY picture hanging. We have broken down the processes into few steps below, and we hope that they will guide you as you try your very first DIY picture hanging.
Site Inspection
When we offer our picture hanging services to our clients, one of the very first steps in picture hanging is the site inspection. This involves identifying the wall space that needs improvement either at home or office. Oftentimes we acquire artworks with the intention of putting them up at home or in our offices, but only to realize that there is absolutely no space for them on our walls.
But what does site inspection entail? Site inspection ensures that you identify wall space(s) suitable for your art; scanning the wall(s) to ensure that there are no hidden pipes or electrical systems that can cause damage, and allowing your mind to visualize the aesthetics of the space. This process is an integral part of picture hanging as you are able to determine the colour scheme that you want to maintain in your home or office; identify furniture that you may have to move around and many more.
Layout of Art
When planning your hanging project, it is important to do the layout. There are two ways that we would recommend for your layout. The first is with the use of paper cut-outs which serves as a dummy or placeholder for the original art-piece. In other words, it should be cut according to the size(s) of your art-piece. After cutting the piece out (preferably using some old newspaper page), apply with a tape to the wall space that you intend to put up your original art. This should give you a clear indication of the space usage without damaging your wall. It also allows you to easily do your markings on the wall before putting up the real artwork.
Another option is to do your layout on the floor, however it is a bit risky as you or someone might step on the artwork. To get this right, you need to ensure that you put precautionary measures in place that will help to eliminate risks.
The plan is simple and requires careful observation and spacing of your art so that you can have a visual imprint in your mind regarding the aesthetics of your space. Another important aspect is the measurements. The sizes on the ground, along with your-in-between art spaces should fit with the wall space (don’t forget that) that you intend to use.
Markings
At this stage, you are clear in terms of the arrangement of your art as well as the sizes. For your marking, it is advisable to use pencil and an eraser. This makes it easy for you to make erasable markings on your wall. Make sure you take into consideration the hooks at the back as you make your markings. For instance, you need to incorporate the in-between frame spaces and the spacing at the back of your frame (from the frame to the hooks).
Installation
For your installation, please ensure that you get some coverings for your floor to ensure you keep your space tidy during your installation. Whether you are using a drill or a hammer, make sure that you use appropriate hooks that are suitable for your artwork. You must consider the weight of your artwork to ensure that the hooks are strong enough to hold them. If you are using a ladder, please ensure that there is a second person to hold the ladder for you as the floor may be slippery. It is advisable to put a rough material under the ladder to ensure that it does not slide off while you are at work.
Final Picture Hanging Inspection
The last stage of our picture hanging services is the inspection of the work. After the installation process, you should inspect your work naturally to determine if you did a good job. If you are happy with your work, am guessing you should have a smile on your face. If not, well you have to try again but making sure that you adopt the tips outlined. Alternatively, if you find the work daunting, engage a professional to assist with your hanging needs.
